the making or breaking of my identity.

{identity} noun: the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

Having true assurance that your identity belongs to Christ, has been something that has been on my mind a lot lately. *Side Note: If you want to read a great book about Living Loved and having true identity in Christ, be sure to check out “Uninvited” by Lysa TerKeurst.

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quite you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing. -Zephaniah 3:17

Your identity is not in your sin, your identity is in your Savior.

So, what does it mean to really belong to Christ? To have assurance that your identity belongs to Him?

First off, probably one of the saddest things for me, is when I hear people say that they are going to go to Heaven because they do all these great things. They begin to list a bunch of stuff. Helping and serving people, going to church, hosting Bible studies, etc. They truly believe that their identity wholeheartedly belongs to Christ.

Ugg, it just makes me cringe. It makes me want to sit them down and have a long chat to step them through the truth. of course, that isn’t always easy. A lot of them don’t want to hear about Christ. They want to continue to believe that their works will get them to Heaven. Can you imagine though if works could get us into Heaven? By golly, think about how hard that would be for everyone?! Sadly, a lot of religions are like this.

The mind feasts on what it focuses on. What consumes my thinking will be the making or the breaking of my identity.

By this point you are probably beating your head up against the wall asking this question: “How do I have true assurance that my identity belongs to Christ?” Ok, here goes…

To have true assurance that my identity belongs to Christ, I must…

  • Realize that I am a sinner.
  • Come to the place of repentance for my sins.
  • Realize that He died on the cross for my sins.
  • Ask for forgiveness and turn from my sins.
  • Live each day walking through the sanctification process. Walking each day striving to please Christ our Lord and Savior.

This is how you can have complete confidence that your identity belongs to Christ. You won’t have to worry about what happens tomorrow. He holds your life in His hands. When you have excepted Christ as your personal Savior, that is when Christ becomes Lord over your life.

If you are not attaching your identity to the unshakable love of your Savior, you will ask the things in your life to be your Savior, and it will never happen. -Paul David Tripp

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come. -2 Corinthians 5:17

So, do you have confidence and the calm reassuring assurance that He holds your identity? That He is King over you life? All of these things are either the making or breaking of your identity. Take these questions, and Ponder them this week.

God shows His love for us and that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8
